DIY Wallpaper:

Materials needed -

  • Wallpaper.
  • Adhesive paste.
  • Clean, dry Roller.
  • Drywall knife and/or 50g sandpaper.
  • Paint roller to apply the paste.
  • Smoother tool.
  • Soft sponge.
  • Taping knife and scissors.

Keep these pointers in mind -

  1. Prep the wall – this can be done by filling in any visible holes, scraping the wall clear with a drywall knife, and/or sanding the surface down till smooth.
  2. Align wallpaper sheets – the trick here is to start at the door and work your way away from the entrance of the room.
  3. Apply adhesive to the surface of the wallpaper – rolling the paste onto the back of the paper will work better than drenching the paper with it. Ensure that you have the correct paste for the job, choose between wheat, clay, and starch pastes, uniquely created with a specific type of wallpaper in mind.
  4. Place the wallpaper onto the wall – it is easier to apply the wallpaper when it has been folded into thirds. Once up, smooth the paper out with a gentle pressing motion using a smoother tool.
  5. Clean as you go – make use of a soft sponge to clean up any residue during the process.
  6. Secure every seam – this can be done by rolling over them with a clean, dry roller.
  7. Use the tapping knife and scissors to remove excess wallpaper along edges, door frames, and skirting boards – it is important to overlap the wallpaper before cutting away the ‘extra’ pieces.

Ways in which you can maintain the integrity of your wallpaper

  1. Use baby wipes to clean the surface of your wallpaper.
  2. Another way to wipe your wallpaper down is with a soft sponge and water or a mild dishwater soap, should you need to remove a stain.
  3. Your vacuum can be a useful tool to remove cobwebs and dust that has settled.
  4. An unusual way of cleaning your wallpaper, should it be a non-washable type, is with a dry wallpaper dough to remove dust, dirt, and cobwebs.
